Kinkbomb.com’s New Server Structure Rocks!

January’s server crash and ensuing data loss was a painful reminder of what happens when you are late.

Last year in November we had decided on upgrading our server structure to an enterprise level, super sophisticated system. The problem is we did not implement it in time and we had a data loss situation in January.

 
Now it is March and we have completed the implementation of our new storage solution. You no longer have Kinkbomb.com supporting your clips but now you have a multi-billion dollar storage company with an army of support engineers. This is the same storage provider found in a majority of the Fortune 500 companies who manage several exabytes of data for US companies alone (an exabyte is 1 million terabytes).  We now have a system that is fully redundant so if anything breaks from a hard disk, to a controller, to a power supply, all the way to the back plane … we do not lose data.  The system phones home and tells our hardware partner to get over to our data center pronto and get things fixed.  It tells us when a disk is going to break BEFORE it happens and we have disks overnighted to us so we just plug it in and it will heal itself from there.

So with this significant investment and re-architecture of the storage environment, we are confident in saying data loss is a thing of the past.

Kinkbomb Server Issue Update – February 4, 2013

We wish to keep our studio partners up to date on our current status.

All systems are working.

The majority of the files unavailable during the recovery process have been restored. All files are available for adding to products. We are still working to recover any missing data and studios can expect to see their files appear in there library within the next couple days.

Uploads via FTP is functioning normally. Please contact us if you encounter any issues uploading files to your studio.

We are currently generating a list of files that are corrupted and will notify studios individually once this list is complete.

As we have in the past, we will extend our studio support and work tirelessly to normalize your studios and get back to the job of helping you achieve sales and grow your business.

Kinkbomb Server Issues Update – January 31, 2013

We wish to keep all of our studio partners up to date on our current status.

We are anticipating that a new replacement server will be delivered Friday and we will begin the install. For anyone who has attempted to get customized server delivery expedited, you can appreciate the difficulty of this process. In anticipation of the new server, we have been working around the clock to stabilize and move forward, including using our cloud based platform to provide work-arounds and delivery of purchases.

We apologize that studios cannot upload or edit yet. We have had to prioritize on multiple fronts and provide solutions on a studio-by-studio basis. The work-around we have in place now is clunky but this will be replaced once the new server is in place and functioning.

At this time, we anticipate to have something resembling “normal” operations before the weekend is out. With that in mind, we will be still transferring data from our staging disks onto the permanent solution, which is required so that your data appears in your studio admin. If your files continue to be missing, they will be restored in the ensuing week or so. Rest assured they will be available for customers who purchases the files.

Due to the crash of the previous hard drive, we anticipate a very small percentage of files will be corrupted and need to be replaced. We will notify studios individually as this is discovered. From previous experience, we understand how challenging this is and we will do whatever is necessary to minimize the work required by our studios.

As we have in the past, we will extend our studio support and work tirelessly to normalize your studios and get back to the job of helping you achieve sales and grow your business.

Kinkbomb Update – January 30, 2013

We know what you are thinking.

“Kinkbomb has blown it again! What the hell is wrong with those guys?”

We understand your frustration because it is very frustrating for us too. Our goal has always been to provide our studio partners with a solid, reliable and easy to use interface so that you can focus on selling. When things go wrong, you get pissed – justifiably so.

So here is our current update-

Website Stability:

We are doing some tweaks to the website but it is stable now.

Restoration of all previews:

We have finished restoring all previews for existing clips.

Capability to upload files, make new clips and edit existing clips:

We have had to make some adjustments to the uploading system and we are now testing it. We expect to have this capability back online in soon, probably early tomorrow.

Status of missing files:

We are in file recovery mode and have scripts running 24 /7. While this is a tedious process, we are fulfilling orders simultaneously. We have cloud back ups of files and transferring from the cloud is moving as fast as possible. We will be making daily updates on this process.

We appreciate your patience.

Once we have our new enterprise level storage and delivery system in place hardware issues such as this will be a thing of the past.

We know that your business is important to you and we will work to get past this challenge as soon as possible. We also know that our studio partners are the reason we are in business. Without you, we don’t exist.

Additionally, we will make it up to you for our mistakes that have affected your business.

Kinkbomb Server Issues Update – January 28

Dear Studio Partners,

As previously stated, we had a server outage Saturday night, January 26th.

We experienced a hardware collapse of our master storage unit, the central gateway to your data.

In order to protect the integrity of the data, we are currently in a READ ONLY mode. This allows us to sell clips for you to customers, but prevents you from having access to your files. THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY. Once we have the new platform in place, you will have complete access to upload and edit again.

Please note, we are currently migrating a substantial amount of data and it will take time to move it all. We are working 24/7 to perform this task. Imagine filling a swimming pool with a garden hose. The job gets done but takes time. We ask for your patience.

Please bear with us through this process. We also have a major hardware upgrade in February that will address this issue and prevent other like-issues from occurring in the future. This involves a huge additional investment and is a testament to the business success we have shared with you. Our growth and success is because of our studio partners – We never forget that.

We will keep you updated as we work through this solution, but at this time we ask that you give us a few days to work to normalize the site again.

Site Outage and Maintenance 1/26/2013

Dear Studio Partners & Customers,

On 1/26/13 Kinkbomb.com suffered a hardware failure that affected the upload and download capability of products. As such, the website was put in maintenance until the majority of issues were resolved. The site is back online, but there are still a few challenges that are being worked through.

As these issues are addressed, this blog post will be edited and notifications will be sent out via email and the StudioZone:

-          Preview images may not load correctly.

-          Studios are asked to not enable missing files.

-          Studios are asked to refrain from uploading new content or change existing content.
